Paul Pitchford studied and apprenticed with masters of pre-Revolutionary* Traditional Chinese medicine, nutrition, and Tai Ji and Chan (Zen) meditation. His landmark book, Healing with Whole Foods: Asian Traditions and Modern Nutrition (North Atlantic Books, soon to be available in 7 languages, including Chinese), forms the foundation of his unique dietary teachings, which unify Eastern and Western therapies.

Over the past 12 years Paul has been a key lecturer with the prestigious Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York City. His work has become a primary impetus behind the most fundamental, clinically effective and innovative dietary movement today, widely known as “whole foods nutrition.” He sees a universal shift to whole foods nutrition as essential for overcoming ecologic ravages to the Earth as well as quelling pervasive disease and degeneration among her peoples.

Paul has been teaching nutrition in the context of foundational healing for 38 years. This approach prioritizes three basic integrative steps in a person’s pathway to enduring health: a) awareness practices, b) mindful movement including yoga, Tai Ji and Qi Gong, and c) nutrition based on regional, unrefined (whole) foods. He has designed and taught programs at Heartwood Institute regularly for the last 25 years. He currently receives invitations to teach worldwide and has given seminars at colleges (including Harvard), schools of acupuncture, nutrition and various healing arts, and on major radio shows.

* Teachings developed prior to the Chinese Cultural Revolution incorporate an abun-dance of ancient methods and traditional values.

Michael Drew, CMT became a Massage Practitioner in 1988 after a short course of study in massage, shiatsu and Watsu at Harbin Hot Springs School of Massage led him to choose to deepen his studies. He then completed Heartwood's Certified Massage Therapist and Transformational Therapist programs, graduating in 1991 with over 1,000 hours of training in those two programs. Michael has practiced for nearly twenty years, continuing to study with the best in the field, taking hundreds of hours of continuing education, and teaching classes of his own since 1992. Michael utilizes his expertise with a varied range of modalities from deep tissue and orthopedic-oriented work to body/mind energy balancing and emotional release-oriented bodywork. Michael has also used his training in the subtler modalities such as lymphatic drainage, cranio sacral, Reiki and Polarity Energy Balancing for emotionally or physically fragile clients, such as those in hospice. Michael's skills and knowledge-based approach to teaching ensures that his students will leave with an understanding of the work that prepares them to continue learning long after the class is over.

Daniel Moore has been drawn to nature since his youth, wandering out of the suburbs into abandoned fields, the rivers, and hills. Learning to live more simply, he found whole foods and wild plants sparked an interest in growing, harvesting, preparing and preserving them. In 2003, he began to learn horticulture with Lawrence Hershman and lead whole foods cooking classes.

Central to Daniel's lifestyle is the practice of Tai Chi, studying directly with Paul Pitchford for the past seven years and currently practicing Sheng Zhen (unconditional love) Qigong at workshops with Master Li Jun Feng. Daniel leads classes in Healing Movement and whole foods preparation and preservation, as well as taking plant walks with students of the Asian Healing Arts and Whole Foods Nutrition program.

Heatherlee S. Richerson, NCTMB, LMT, developed a passion for massage therapy at the age of eight, when she was successfully treated for a bone injury that otherwise would have required extensive medical treatment. She was so amazed by the healing power of therapeutic touch that she began studying holistic healing techniques almost exclusively from that point on. Heatherlee graduated with honors from the Therapeutic Massage program at Ashmead College in 2003. Shortly thereafter, she acquired her National Certification, and immediately began her private practice. She has practiced in a diverse array of environments in multiple states. In 2005 she began her career as an educator at Heartwood Institute as a Teaching Assistant for the Massage Therapy program. Heatherlee’s enthusiasm for the vast intricacies of the human body, with it’s incredible ability to adapt, is fanned by her belief that deeper understanding will empower us and facilitate our ability to help heal ourselves and others. In addition to Massage Therapy, Heatherlee practices Yoga, Dance, and Martial Arts as physical expression and further exploration of the truly limitless potential of the human body.
