Anatomy & Physiology for Bodyworkers
Part I: February 10 - 16, 2007
Part II: September 22 - 28, 2007
NOTE: Part II can be taken without having taken Part I.
This practical, enjoyable two-part intensive is designed by a bodyworker for bodyworkers. The student will gain an experiential understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy and the fundamentals of human kinesiology. We will use a "hands on" approach to learning that includes palpating bones and bony landmarks, stretching muscles, and locating and/or drawing them on each other. The course goes beyond mere muscles and bones, integrating relevant physiology, and addressing the musculoskeletal pathologies that bodyworkers most often encounter in their practices. These include carpal tunnel syndrome, low back pain, sciatica, and thoracic outlet syndrome.
Students will receive a specially prepared study guide annotated with page references to the required texts. Lectures will be enhanced with multiple overheads, cadaver videos, skeletons, charts, and selected coloring assignments.
Part I will cover:
- Anatomical terminology
- Upper-body musculoskeletal anatomy
- Actions and functions of the upper-body muscles
- Theory of movement as used to assess movement dysfunction
- The structure of joints
- Impact of bodywork on connective tissues and fascia
- Pathologies of muscles and joints
Part II will cover:
- Lower-body musculoskeletal anatomy
- Actions and functions of the lower-body muscles,
- Postural effects of core muscles
- Effects of bodywork on the autonomic nervous system, circulatory system, and lymphatic system
- The bodys neuro-endocrine response to stress
Each part: 7 Days, 50 Hours. Tuition: $695 plus accommodations.
